A Southern Verse won a Silver Award from PX3 - Prix De La Photographie Paris, second place in the International Photography Awards (IPA) monograph category, and was chosen in the top 5 by the IPA jury.
In stark contrast to the rapid growth of the metropolitan areas of the southeastern United States, the more rural centers of this region have seen a slow, steady decline. A Southern Verse is a frank study of the landscapes of small towns in this region.
The quiet images reflect a slower pace of life that is possibly more religious and patriotic in a place that, at times, is seemingly abandoned. However, the sequence of images illustrates a region that, despite the apparent dwindling, beckons with a sense of welcome.
Guided by the lines of structures and objects, both natural and artificial, the landscapes in A Southern Verse encourage exploration, examination, and navigation in deep and subtle ways.
In many ways, A Southern Verse reflects not only the rural south but also rural areas throughout North America. The images, though free of criticism and praise, recite the poetry of a landscape that is oddly common and curiously foreign.
