El taller de Carlos Canal [Carlos Canal’s Workshop] is a hybrid book. On the one hand, it surveys the author’s creative career, and on the other, each project is presented as an invitation to readers, igniting a creative spark that will inspire them to begin telling their own photographic stories.

Carlos Canal is a singular photographer who has explored different facets of photographic language and of life with a boundless curiosity and desire to experiment throughout his career as an artist, teacher and doctor.

His proposals suggest exploring one’s own biography, the memory of places inhabited or visited, investigating relationships, offering the camera to others, embracing chance in the selection of images and cuttings by appropriating and reusing photos, and accompanying people with difficulties through the photographic medium. He addresses universal themes, proving that photography can be an ideal tool for constructing one’s own history.
In summary, the book is a standing invitation to share the warmth and openness of this talented photographer, who reveals the best of his creative and human experience in these pages.

In Piedra como yo [Stone Like Me], Esther Pita takes a solitary journey to Cabo de Gata and weaves a delicious photographic narrative, summarised in six images and one poem.

The polished, austere, elegant format and materials of this book call upon our memories, fears and courage, inviting us to share the journey—a metaphor for the one we must all take in life. The work, lying open on a shelf, is also a daily reminder of the joy that can be found in sharing a part of someone else’s private experience through images and embracing it as our own.

Ana Cayuela (1991), author of the title The Emotional Power of Capital, decides to carry out a collective creation project in Havana, Cuba, reflecting on the differences that economic power and mobility options imprint on personal ties. Together with eight co-authors of Cuban origin, Cayuela puts into practice a series of photographic workshops and shared dialogues, thus generating a polyhedral, complex story, in which autobiographical narration is combined with a documentary that affects the critical possibilities of photography. The selected images constitute an exhibition of that shared intimacy, of that humanity subject to the emotional power that capital contains.

Laura C. Vela examines her relationship with her father by reviewing the family photo album and initiating a rite of passage from adolescence to maturity. This book, the photographer’s first project, explores the concept of the photo journal and family memories and pays tribute to roads as symbols of the paths we take in life.

It is therefore a thoughtful reflection on identity, expressed with a highly personal and contemporary photographic aesthetic. This volume revisits Laura’s debut photographic project.
