Exils
Joseph Koudelka
In 1970, after reporting on the Soviet invasion, Josef Koudelka renounced his Czech citizenship and became stateless, thus beginning a long journey of exile. Crossing European borders, as a free man, he photographed whatever he wanted: places, objects, people. These images of life radiate an astonishingly profound force. Nomadic and visionary, Koudelka portrays a world in which the tragic invades everyday life. The selection of images proposed by Exiles takes us on a journey that speaks both of the self and of the notion of another place. They seem particularly acute today, when Europe is shaken by so many crises.
