Interior America

Chauncey Hare captures the terrifying, claustrophobic ordinariness of the real America that lives its bewildered days behind the myth of progress, the facade of opulence. It is the America where the cracks in the plaster, the dishes in the sink, the stains on the linoleum are the hieroglyphs of despair. His photographs are the wilderness of modern life, like a death wish coming together. After reading the personal statement Hare has attached to this book, I can see that these are not simply photographs of America's interior, but of his own inner self. He has lived the estrangement and despair of these images.
