In July 2019 I arrived at Ezkio with a suitcase that was a great question in itself, but first I needed to find the women who could answer it. Staying for a time in Ormáiztegi and having been selected for a cross-border residence, I decided to intercept them at every opportunity that presented itself to me in the town or in the mountains.

This is how eighteen women from the area of Urola Garaia and Goierri, in Euskal Herria, agreed to begin a journey to the past-present-future, which began with an interview, continued with photographic visual poetics and was tied into a ritual in the territory two months later, the same territory where women healers who knew how to communicate with nature, doctors and scientists, sensitive and powerful, were called witches.

In 2019, eighteen witches of different ages, knowledgeable about their history and their environment, walkers of the mountain, creators of their food, a mixture of farmhouse and metal, told me about their childhoods, their games, their fears, their joys and fantasies, about their grandmothers, their mothers, their girls. The same ones that affirm that the matriarchy was always behind closed doors, the same ones that fight for them every day and those that will come. Mix of mint and mount in your veins, ears for the squawks, breath for the scream.

They are the territory.

The rest, mount of your beliefs.
