“That must be the most logical disease in the world, the eye that is blind transmits blindness to the eye that sees, that simple” ‘Essay on blindness’. -José Saramago.
When the “state of alarm” was decreed, we were forbidden to leave our homes except to go shopping for basic necessities. One of the many consequences of that period of isolation was that the Earth had a well-deserved break from human hyperactivity. Everything was paralyzed and to go to the street we had to do it with protective measures: gloves and a mask. But once again, unconsciousness and selfishness caused those much-needed protections to be thrown away after being used, thus re-intoxicating our environment and nature.
Pandemic remnants are a group of images that are cut out in space as if they were visual architectures. They take place in a very precise geography, the environment where I was confined. I look at them as if they were the figures in a puzzle that records what happened after this selfish and uncivil act of wearing and throwing away the masks and gloves that we use for our protection. These images also have an expressive and abstract nature, where the organic, the cut lines and the contrasts of black and white serve to bring us closer and enclose us, even more if possible, in that “still life” that is the waste and its consequences.
