SHADOW CHAMBER

Roger Ballen (1950) questions the way we perceive the “reality” of photography. His surprising and ambiguous images of people, animals and objects posed in mysterious cells occupy the gray zone between reality and fiction, blurring the boundaries between documentary photography and art forms such as painting, theater and sculpture. His most recent work, produced between 2000 and 2004, is the result of Ballen's decades of working with and photographing the marginalized of South African society.
