James Goodchild
Manchester, United KingdomJames Goodchild is a photographic image maker and educator, whose work is inspired by literature and poetry. A Flâneur with a keen interest in phenomenology, and psychogeography he immerses himself in his surroundings, whether it be the streets of Paris or the mountains of Wales.
He possesses an unfaltering curiosity, searching for what can never be found, observing the people and details around him, capturing images that contain surrealist undertones to articulate emotion in the viewer. After being a photography course leader for ten years he began to pursue his personal work after successfully graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in 2017. He is currently studying for a practice-led PhD at the University of Leeds.

The photographs in this book have been made in and around Western Europe before the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. The work captures the humanistic side of the continent and the similarities between each nation rather than its differences. This is why in the book the site where each photograph has been made is given only through its length, to invite the viewer to consider this. Combined with an ordering where each image has a visual link to the next, the work focuses on the whole rather than the individual.
