The Gohat Katoon School for Girls in Mazar - I - Sharif, Afghanistan
This book is a unique photodocument of women's rights and a clash of cultures in Afghanistan,
The Gohar Katoon School is the largest school for girls in Afghanistan. It sparked the dreams and redefined the future of young women in that country when it opened iduring a hopeful time in 2015.
Architectural photographer Nic Lehoux was there in the summer of 2015, capturing the school and extending the story into this photographic essay.
In an effort to showcase the significance of young women's education in Afghanistan , it was important to contrast the school and it's surroundings
So, This book is a photoessay in three parts.
Nic photographed extensively the school and its students at work, rest and play.
This is contrasted by a parallel photoessay of the workers who built the school, in their working environment.
Furthermore, there is a set of photographs of Mazar-I-Sharif and its people.And finally, there is a special photoessay within the book that showcases young Afghani women empoertrd by an extraordinary skateboarding program entitled Skatistan.
This book is the story in pictures of an odyssey. It is the story of a progressive institution cohabiting within the context of its immediate, conservative and tormented environment, captured during a time of hope. The School in the city.
