As if Georges Perec teamed up with Sophie Calle, Canadian writer and visual artist Leanne Shapton constructs a book from a couple's possessions: movie tickets, countless borrowed and annotated books, handwritten messages scribbled on any surface, photographs and travel souvenirs, a dinner menu, a lock of hair, and even that hideous salt shaker shaped like a dachshund, a gift from her mother-in-law that was never used. After the breakup, all of this becomes a series of numbered lots, with precise measurements and brief descriptions that speak to us between the lines. "Important Artifacts" is an auction house catalog, but also a love story: poignant and fragmented, playful and nostalgic, told through photographs of objects, their descriptions, and a few handwritten notes.
