A study on photography produced as a tool of political propaganda during the Estado Novo in Portugal. Finalist for the Historical Book Award at Les Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles 2022.
Through montage and photomontage, photography printed during the Estado Novo in Portugal explored the narrative and connotative possibilities of the image in different publications, acquiring relevance both in official propaganda and in discourses of opposition to the regime.
The result of a research project, Fotografia impressa e propaganda em Portugal no Estado Novo is a reference for historians, researchers, collectors and photographers. The book contains 238 reproductions of 50 historical publications from 1928 to the end of the dictatorship in 1974 (books, illustrated magazines and catalogs), organized in four thematic chapters and accompanied by comments that summarize and contextualize each of the publications referenced. The selection proposed by Filomena Serra also includes some 'protest' publications or those that propose an alternative discourse to the official image: the surrealism of Fernando Lemos, the humanism of Palla and Martins or the critical visions of Salazar's authoritarian regime. The selection is completed by some publications on Portugal that appeared outside the country itself.
