“NORTE” is the third part of the trilogy by David Hornillos dedicated to the railway stations of Madrid. If "Mediodía" focused on Atocha station and "Ustedes, los vivos" did the same with Chamartín, "NORTE" takes place in Madrid's Príncipe Pío station, whose original name was Estación del Norte. As in the two previous projects (culminating in two books published in 2014 and 2018 respectively), the photographer articulates the work through self-imposed limitations: working in a limited territory and repetitively photographing certain elements; furthermore, here too, the railway station is a mere excuse to address more universal issues. Brutalist aesthetics, the constant presence of crutches, an overdose of vertical and metallic elements and a lot of asphalt, the terrain we walk on; the project focuses on the struggle for verticality, for balance, for not falling, ultimately for survival. The very binding of the book in turn generates one more vertical element in the images and somehow evokes the human spine, the one that keeps us upright.
