Photo Tibet: 1993-1995

“Tibet 1993–1995” is a limited-edition photo book published in 1996 by Chinese artist Gao Bo, which documents the life, spirituality, and landscapes of Tibet through a deeply personal and experimental lens. The work stands out for its meticulous presentation and its artistic approach that transcends traditional documentary photography.

Gao Bo discovered his calling as a photographer after his first trip to Tibet in 1985. Between 1985 and 1995, he made five trips to the region, documenting Tibetan life, spirituality, and landscapes. His work is characterized by a fusion of documentary photography and artistic experimentation: he uses large-format and Polaroid cameras, interacts directly with his subjects, and, years later, reinterprets his images with ink, paint, fabric, wood, and even his own blood.
