Biography: Ana Valdivia is a Research Professor in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Governance and Policy at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII). Ana researches how digitalisation and algorithmic systems are transforming the political, social and ecological world. With a background in mathematics and computer science, her research focuses on the impact of AI on local communities, borders and territories. Her current work aims to examine the environmental impact of AI throughout its supply chain, from mineral extraction to chip manufacturing, data centres and e-waste dumps. She is also interested in analysing algorithmic resistance and oppression from a feminist perspective.

Biography: Felipe Tobar is Associate Professor at the University of Chile and Director of the Data and Artificial Intelligence Initiative at the same institution. He is a Researcher at the Centre for Mathematical Modelling and the Advanced Centre for Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Before joining the University of Chile, Felipe was a postdoctoral researcher in the Machine Learning group at the University of Cambridge and received a PhD in Signal Processing from Imperial College London in 2014. Felipe’s research focuses on approximate Bayesian inference, spectral estimation, optimal transport and Gaussian processes. Felipe was Coordinator of the Master in Data Science at the University of Chile between 2020 and 2022, and his teaching includes graduate and continuing education courses in machine learning, generative models and statistics.
