Bogotá D.C. is a very interesting book because it is designed with a specific classification, there are six sections of the book that represent the different socio-economic strata of the city of Bogotá. With this book, Colombian photographer and artist Guadalupe Ruiz explores six houses from the city's six different tax classes whose residents range from extremely wealthy to impoverished. By taking photographs of apartments and cityscapes, complete interiors and individual furnishings, Ruiz creates a cohesive and multi-layered portrait of the city as a whole. In each of the chapters one can see the interiors of the homes of families we recognize by their religiosity, the importance of family, the kitsch style in the décor, and the care they take with their most personal objects.
From these curious typologies of Bogotá home interiors, all composed with the same rigor and approach to space, emerge some surprising cultural parallels between socioeconomic classes that subtle readers may begin to notice over time.Guadalupe Ruiz- Bogotá D. C. makes a subtle yet stimulating classification and examination of urban life in the Colombian capital. The book includes more than one hundred dazzling images arranged by neighborhood. A map of the neighborhoods and a complementary essay are included to provide context for Ruiz's stunning photographs.
