Alberto García-Alix

Cabeza de Chorlito

We are publishing an unprecedented journey through Alberto García-Alix's early photographs. The first volume includes 2,154 photographs taken between 1975 and 1981. They show the author's life and surroundings at a historic moment for Spain, a time of great political, social, and cultural upheaval known as the Transition.

The first volume of the collection covers a period of seven years (1975-1981) marked by the death of General Franco and the emergence of the so-called Movida Madrileña. During this period, Alberto García-Alix's photographs show the first CNT rally after the civil war; one of the first demonstrations in Spain for the rights of homosexuals, lesbians, and transsexuals; the birth of youth subcultures and the effervescent cultural activity of Madrid's Rastro flea market; and also his initiation into drugs.

These seven years began with the photographer's debut behind the camera and lasted until his first solo exhibition at the Buades gallery in Madrid.
