Spain, Types and Costumes was the first series to be published in 1930, first in Germany and then in Spain by Editorial Espasa-Calpe, a publishing house that published twelve editions of the work until 1971.

The aim of this series, in the words of Ortiz Echagüe himself, is to perpetuate in graphic documents that remain unchanged over time, everything that Spanish clothing has been and still is.

The theme of his work makes him the representative of the Generation of '98 in the art of photography, as he captures the most defining characteristics of the Spanish people: their customs and traditional attire, and their places, landscapes and monuments.

The exhibition held in Berlin in 1929 was undoubtedly key to the success, awareness and recognition of Ortiz Echagüe's photographic work, not only by paving the way for other national and international exhibitions, but also, and perhaps more importantly, by initiating the publication of the different series of his photographic albums: Spain, Types and Costumes, Spain, Towns and Landscapes, Mystical Spain, Spain, Castles and Fortresses, Morocco and Family Photos.
