There is an exercise that I use in my classes and that consists of the following: I show the class some four or five photos of houses and I ask them to comment on what they see. They generally describe them formally; they talk about the com- position, the image’s quality or some architecture style. There’s always one student who postulates suspicion, knowing there is a trap. Aftersharing impressions about the photographs, I tell them that these houses are places where Nazi hierarchs stayed. Silence fills the classroom. And then I ask them: What do you see now?
This book is a continuation of that exercise. A possible investigation into the infinite relationship between image and word and the conditions that this link imposes on our way of understanding and living the world.
